West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has again asserted her government's position against the Waqf Bill, saying that the TMC government will not implement the law in the state. Through a long tweet, Banerjee asked everyone to "remain calm" and "hold themselves back," reiterating that every human life is precious and riots cannot be initiated for political gains.
Banerjee's remarks follow extensive vandalism in Bengal's Murshidabad district, where agitators have been protesting against the Waqf Amendment Bill. Agitators even vandalized the Jalangi BDO Office in Murshidabad. In spite of the agitations, Banerjee's government has assured strict action against people involved in "hooliganism".
Senior BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari has railed against Mamata Banerjee, asking her why she remains silent on the violence. Adhikari questioned why the state government had not denounced the acts of terror unequivocally and if vote-bank politics was being given precedence over the safety of West Bengal's citizens and institutions.
West Bengal Director General of Police Rajeev Kumar has assured that the police will deal sternly with those who indulge in violence. "An atmosphere of unrest was observed in Jangipur yesterday, and communal disturbance has also been observed. All types of hooliganism will not be tolerated," Kumar stated. The police will use Section 163 in places where violence has been reported and act sternly if government property is damaged.
Banerjee requested all to maintain peace and harmony and told that religion is all about humanity, goodwill, civilization, and harmony. She added that her government will take action against the people who organize riots and will never support any violent activity. The TMC chief also slammed the central government for passing the Waqf Amendment Bill without discussing it with the state government
